"Hidden Gem" Elakala Falls is a picturesque and alluring wonder. Located in Blackwater Falls State Park, this hidden gem is often overlooked by the parks namesake waterfall. I was fortunate to have great water flow on this day to display the many cascades that pour over ancient rock that eventually lead to Blackwater River at the bottom of the canyon.

The falls is made up of three main plunges with only the top one accessible with relative ease.

Three spectacular waterfalls are just a stone’s throw from the Blackwater Falls Lodge. The Elakala Trail begins near the lodge parking area, and after a short stroll through a forest of evergreens and deciduous trees, you’ll reach a footbridge spanning Shays Run. Cross the footbridge and continue along the Elakala Trail for 15 yards or so. Each of the other Elakala Falls get progressively more challenging to reach because there is no official trail and you will have to do some scrambling to get down into the canyon. I wasn’t able to make it beyond the first one because the high water left left no room to photograph from the banks that day, but if you are able to venture to Elakala Falls 2, 3, and 4 you can get some great photos.
